22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie was shot in the head at about 10:30 PM in Orlando, Florida, USA on Friday evening. Kevin James Loibl, 27, from St. Petersburg, Florida has been named as the man behind the attack, with police claiming he was likely a “deranged” fan. The Orlando Police Department reported that Loibl had no prior arrest records and was not known to Grimmie.

Grimmie was signing autographs after performing with the band Before You Exit at concert at The Plaza Live when Loibl entered the area and shot her in the head. Her brother, Mark, tackled Loibl, who then shot himself dead. Police responded to a report of a shooting at The Plaza live in Orlando, Florida at around 10:30 PM. Officers arrived at the scene approximately two minutes later and secured the area where they found two people had been shot. Officers declared Mr. Loibl to be deceased and sent the victim to hospital with critical injuries. She died at the hospital shortly after arriving.

Detectives were told the suspect “walked towards Christina and shot her.” It was after this that her brother tackled the suspect – stopping him from causing more harm to the hundred or so people in the area. During the struggle, the gun “went off” and the Loibl shot himself.

Relatives of the man who murdered Christina Grimmie have apologised for for the senseless act in a note attached to their front door. A scribbled note was found pinned to the door of the family home which reads:

Deepest sorrow for lost (sic) to the family, friends, and fans of the very talented, loving Christna Grimmie. No other comments.

Their son was named late in the investigation, only being described by police as a “white male suspect” during interviews and statements.

First discovered on YouTube, Grimmie, managed to amass over three million followers in a short period. She won a spot on Season 6 of The Voice (US) after her audition impressed judges. NBC and The Voice issued a statement saying “There are now words. We lost a beautiful soul with an amazing voice. Our hearts go out to the friends, fans, and family of [Christina Grimmie].”

Approximately four hours before her death, Christina issued a video where she encouraged fans to see her live at her Orlando gig.

Christina had a promising career ahead of her. During her short life she had worked with Adam Levine (Maroon 5), Selena Gomez, and Dove Cameron. Initially performing covers, Grimmie released her debut album With Love in August 2013 as well as two EPs in 2011 and February 2016. Grimmie stated that she would be releasing a new EP shortly.

Before You Exit, the band she was performing with before her death, wrote a tweet upon hearing the news saying: “Today we lost an angel, sister, and a beloved friend.”
