Victim of Cologne New Year’s Eve assaults brands police response “pathetic”

17-year-old student was assaulted five times

  • Claims German police and witnesses did nothing to stop attacks

A 17-year-old victim of the Cologne New Year’s Eve sexual assaults has labelled the German authorities’ failure to apprehend rapists and gropers as a “scandal.” The gang of mostly-Arab migrant men performed up to 1,000 separate attacks on the New Year’s Eve – nearly all targeting European women.

Student Dilara Zajarskaite, who was assaulted on five separate occasions by Arab men, now feels she’s left with few options for her safety and has decided to take up self-defence classes. She joins a growing number of German women taken classes to protect themselves against sexual assaults.

On New Year’s Eve, Dilara and a female friend left Cologne train station and were harassed, molested, assaulted, and almost abducted while witnesses and police officers ignored her, she claims.

“We were attacked separate five times and no one stopped to help us. These Arab men touched me and hurt me. They tried to kidnap my best friend. It was terrifying.

“I told a policeman what had happened to us that night but he said it was not worth making a complaint because I could not name any of the attackers.”

Dilara and her friend were left traumatised and stopped going out on their own, instead making sure they always had a group of friends with them. However, the 17-year-old has decided to take self-defence classes to protect herself.

“I was by the cathedral in the evening a few weeks ago and this [Arabic-speaking] guy grabbed me and put his arm around me and tried to pull me towards him. But I remembered what I had learnt at the self defence course and I punched him hard in the ribs,” Dilara told the MailOnline.

He tried to hit me back so I put my hand behind his neck and slammed his face into my knee. It felt so good to fight back. Now I can protect myself.”

Whilst Ms. Zajarskaite has managed to regain self-confidence, her friend has not. The young women, who wishes to remain anonymous, claimed “It [the series of attacks] was the worst thing that has ever happened to me.

“I was, and still am, deeply shocked at what people are capable of doing.”

New footage has been leaked showing the police failing to control large crowds, including scuffles with young men and a woman heard screaming “You mustn’t touch me, you mustn’t touch me.”
